October 07 2005

Ahem. Been a while, eh? We've been busy though. Seriously. Thanks to the sterling work of Aido - and his studio mooks Owen and Rog - the new CD is nearing completion. Honestly. Gene Pool Cleaner & The Night Of The Cannibals - as it is titled - will feature no less than 12 tracks, and all going well will be available for sale/extortion/bootlegging sometime in Fuck-knows-when. We'll have more information about pricing, where to get it, etc, just as soon as anything is finalised.

If anyone is interested in hearing some of the new stuff, get on down to The Lower Deck, Portobello, Dublin on Thursday, November 3rd for our first gig in five months. Also on the bill are Dead Boys And Girls. The Upgrades and Helper Monkey. Doors open around 8pm (we think), and admission is just five (5) of those magnificent Mickey Mouse European dollars.

October 07 2005

If anyone is interested in hearing some of the new stuff, get on down to Fibbers, Dublin on Friday, October 7th for our first gig in four months. Also on the bill are Chosen and Damocles. Doors open around 10pm (we think), and admission is just two of those magnificent Mickey Mouse European dollars. And just in case you're confused by the posters, Jimslip is really us in disguise...

[Oct 7th: Due to circumstances beyond the control of an alarm clock, gS will not be playing this gig. Apologies to all, and we hope to have something lined up for the end of the month - more news soon.]

We'll also be marking the launch of GPC&TNOTC with a brand new gS website, set to - controversially, shockingly, relevantly - actually feature the words "GYM SLIP" in the address. Watch this space. Or alternatively check back in a month or so when it's up and running. May 16 2005

Apologies for the shocking lack of updates lately... the Carlow & Whelans gigs have been and gone - with an additonal rocking in O'Loughlins shoehorned in for good measure. I guess you could say that we are in pre-production (i.e. getting our arses in gear) for the recording of Gene Pool Cleaner. Tracks set to feature include Sex Bus, Shiver, Sever, Walking Bodies, Gene Pool Cleaner, Violets, Night Of The Cannibals, Evolution For Shopping and Clocks. All going well, GPC should be hitting the shelves towards the end of the summer. Check out the message board for updates and more info. Abudish.

March 26 2005

A handful of upcoming gigs to tell y'all about - Saturday March 26 2005: Buzz's, Carlow, with Pressure 28; Thursday April 07 2005: Lower Deck, Dublin, with Nearly Dead Jim and Marvin; Monday April 25 2005: Whelans, Dublin with Nearly Dead Jim and Boss Volenti. Check out the message board for updates and more info. Abudish.

January 19 2005

Since the last update, we've brought the gSquall to past haunts Sherriff Guevera's, Carlow, and Morrisseys (Coda Club), Kilkenny. These shows saw the appearance of newbies Shiver and Sever, both of which are set to appear on this year's (hopeful) opus, tentatively titled Gene Pool Cleaner. Full timeline and progress to follow. Keep an eye on the message board and gigs page for any future dates. That is all.

November 16 2004

The slightly-slower-than-most gS tour machine pulled into Kilkenny for the first time on Sunday, November 14, and here's hoping it ain't the last. The venue was the Coda Club - directions to which seemed to be beyond O'Connor and his return to four wheels - and the occasion saw the addition of newbie Shiver to the gSet.

It began with several individual bus/rail/road trips (including some to Killeshin), and a gathering of band & motley hangers on in the Dunnes Store car park. It ended with The Smoke Express answering questions re: street racing.

Back at the venue, there was a healthy crowd forming as the first band (apologies - didn't catch the name...) plugged in. After High Speed Collision and their impressive shirt 'n' tie high octane rock 'n' roll, it was the turn of Winterlong, who ended an energetic and topless set with reckless abandon and trashed instruments.

Last up were gS, kicking into Waiting Scales, and running through Throw Me Some Death, Sex Monster, Bethus, Shiver, C-Hucks and There Were Snakes.

Cheers to Aidan and everyone involved, and the Carlow & Athy heads for showing up - it was tremendex.

Next up - the Anti-Pop Christmas seisiún gig in Carlow. Sherrif Guevara's, Saturday 11th December, doors at 2pm. Also on the bill are Undeclared, Disorder, Nearly Dead Jim, and Dead Letter Office.

September 06 2004

Friday's Epitaph gig in Slatterys was nothing short of tremendous. Hard, class, and it worked! Affairs kicked off with Bigger Than Jesus and their ATDI-tinged rock. The Jimmy Eat World cover went down a treat with the S.E.C. (Slip Emo Contingent). Earlier, Escape Artist had been forced to pull off the bill, leaving space for Seacat-impressed Liverpudlians Day With Mary to add another show to their tour. The five piece launched into an energetic set of excellent rock proportions, their vocalist in particular finding time to roam the dancefloor in between melodies and bounding from the kick drum. They ended with a fine run through Duran Duran's Rio - Dave and O'Connor leading the appreciation from the back of the room. Last up on the night were gS, and the second performance of the evening for Rog, who'd already bass-ed it up with Pinion in Doran's before trucking across town to Slatterys. Skanking into Throw Me Some Death (the Spinal Tap intro did not go unnoticed), the Slip followed it up with newbie Sex Monster. Bethus and C-Hucks were melded seamlessly to each other, and the set rounded off with an appearance by that man Aspro and a hectic Liquid. Minutes later, the earnest drinking began, spilling out into the street and on to Jimmy's, and then Rathmines. Crew members were lost, boosts given to stranded party-goers, and South American freedom fighters appeared to shape-shift in the wake of a bong...

Thanks to James & Epitaph Ireland for having us again, the venue, the bands, and all y'all who showed up - much appreciation!

August 24 2004

Thanks again to James and the Big Deadly people for Saturday's show in the Rugby Club, Carlow. Though without the services of Rog, The Slip skanked through a seven-song set which saw the return of Bitter Pill To Swallow. We also managed to offload a bunch of CDs and fit in a healthy feed of pints afterwards. Also on the bill were the excellent Dwight, along with Itchy Trigger Finger and local heads Scatterbrained and Riptskins. There may well be photos if Jimmy's new cleek phone is up to the task. Next up for gS is another Epitaph gig, this time in Slatterys, Capel Street, on Friday, September 3rd. Also on the bill are Bigger Than Jesus and Escape Artist, and doors open at 7:30pm. Admission is €10, €8 with flyer (available from Jimmy, so go get), or €6 with student ID.

August 04 2004

Many thanks to all y'all who showed up to support gS at Eamon Doran's last night - hugely appreciated! Thanks also to the bands (Rooster 32, Andalusia, and Rubus Brown) and to Epitaph to having us. Two new as-yet-unnamed tunes were aired - may be a while yet before they're on tape! - and we managed to offload a handful of CDs.

Also, a large-ass thanks to Rog from Pinion for his seamless integration into the gS fold for last night's set. Socks were given! There should be a couple of photos from the gig up here, just as soon as the D.O.O. gets around to handing them over. [Images now here].

Check the gigs page for details of upcoming shows! For details of the Big Deadly Gig in the Rugby Club, Carlow, on August 21st, see the flyer here.

July 13 2004

The new gS CD, crowrubbishempire, will be released on July 31st. The thirty-minute, seven-track disc was recorded in Trackmix last March, and mastered more recently by Sean Doyle. Barring any major cockups, we should have here some sample mp3s and details of how to get your hands on a copy around the time of the launch.

gS will be hawking the new CD at all gigs from here on, beginning with an all-ages show in the Eire Óg Clubhouse, Carlow, on Saturday, July 31st (alongside MKII and Scatterbrained - please note change of venue, and now, er, please note that this gig is cancelled), and an evening show in Eamon Doran's, Dublin, on Tuesday, August 3rd. Many thanks to Anti-Pop and Epitaph respectively for having us.

Lastly, and certainly not leastly, we hope to be welcoming a second guitarist to the fold in the very near future. More details just as soon as said guitarist is in place. In the meantime, Rog from Pinion will be helping flesh out the gSound at the upcoming gigs. So be nice to him.

May 17 2004

Our return to the Voodoo Lounge - first time since the parental-advisory elimination from a certain band challenge - began with a heroic dose of pizza and pints. It moved swiftly through lurid poetry to a solid 10:30pm gSet, which incorporated a return to the fold for Yeast, which was, er, then rapidly dropped from Saturday's set. Following the Slip onstage was Mark Greville, and after tentative sampling of the Vodka Cruiser wares, the boys loaded into a taxi and called it a night. Thanks to Eddie and CPU Records for the gig, and to Jimmy's heads for showing up.

On Saturday, it was down to the old hometown for the latest Gigsmart single launch outing, this time for funk merchants New Colour Soul. Also on the bill were MKII, Mike Got Spiked and Ript Skin. NCS went down a treat, both with The Big J and the exhuberant dancing masses. The duet between gS and Arthur Guinness was always going to hamper any attempts to rock, and the less said about the ill-fated closing gSlot, the better. Still, the sampler CDs don't appear to have been binned straight away, and crowrubbishempire should be ready to drop within the month. Thanks to Niall and the boys for this one, and to all y'all who came down.

May 11 2004

A couple of quick updates - we play the Voodoo Lounge on Thursday, May 13th, as part of the CPU Late Night Sessions, and then Sherrif Guevara's, Carlow, on Saturday, May 15th, on the New Colour Soul single launch tour. The latter gig is all ages, afternoon, and also features MKII and Mike Got Spiked.

We'll have 2-track sampler CDs to hand out at the Carlow show, so if you want one, just ask one of the gS fools. crowrubbishempire will then follow in a matter of weeks/months* (* delete according to removal of fingers re: release date).

April 20 2004

Dunno how the fuck the time will be found, but here's where we'll attempt to provide some updates from the "Brought To You By The Letter C Tour 2004"...

Apr 10 - Scraggs Alley, Carlow
The first leg of the most insane week so far in gS lore saw us back in the hometown, rocking the Alley as part of the Pinion single launch. The train journey down on Good Friday saw Compton Ass O'Connor waving his Bahrain bling at all and sundry, pausing his tales of desert sordidity only to bawl out the unfortunate others in the carriage. On Saturday, Hostile were first onto the floor in Scraggs, getting proceedings off to a suitably heavy start, and ending with "Fucking Hostile". Choice. Next up were Death To The Teddy Bears, kicking off with a Lostprophets cover and blasting through "Chop Suey" as well as a handful of their own. Pinion bowled in fresh from an earlier date in Portlaoise, and raced through a solid set of punken goodness, before departing for gig #3 of the day. They were followed in Scraggs by gS, who skanked into usual set-closer Bethus, and tore into a set which saw newbies Throw Me Some Death and Waiting Scales cropping up for the first time. Making his Simpsons-reciting gS road crew debut was Dylan, officially The Youngest gS Fan™. Once the rage of C-Hucks had passed, it was off to the bar, and the beginning of a session which would veer from pints to an extended Weezer/QOTSA/Therapy?/Bloodhound Gang/Sabbath jam session back upstairs, and then on to a savage array of sandwiches at Chez O'Connor. Meanwhile, back at the Alley, last band of the afternoon were Sundogs, whose heavy blues rock went down a treat with the dancing ladies. They ended with "Welcome To The Jungle", which always rocks. Photos from the gig (courtesy of David, as always) are on the Images page.

Apr 13 - Old Oak, Cork
Note to selves: midweek gigs in Cork and long bastard cramped bus journeys just DON'T work. This one was a SUAS fundraiser dubbed "From Cork To Dehli", raising, er, funds for Thomas Jordan's upcoming trip to India. Check out the site for more details. The Cypress Avenue venue - also host to Therapy? and Mickey Joe Harte? over the coming weeks - was admirably decked out in artwork (for sale, not for theft), and gS took to the stage after sets from locals Dirt Track and The Loser Lounge. O'Connor would later be found - gin in hand - recommending to one of the female Loser Lounge frontpersons that they seal the deal on their Tatu cover by recreating the lipstick lesbian smooches. Said frontperson rightly edged slowly away from the bassist. The gSet began with Throw Me Some Death and quickly descended into catastrophe, as Murt sent cymbals and floor toms flying during Bethus; not used to the restraints of a 1970's jazz kit, he would need the capable drum teching of Mr. Jordan before the song was over. Next to implode was the snare drum stand - twice - during Waiting Scales, leading to taunts from both Jimmy and O'Connor, and an impassioned warble from the latter about his return to Cork. The boys then hurtled through C-Hucks, much to the nose-turning disgust of the more arty types. Once finished with the rock, the bar became the order of the day, with Cisco's stalwart Finbar impressively reciting Depraved lyrics. Once turfed from the venue and its endless stream of singer/songwriters, it was off to the Old Blackrock Road, much herb and acoustic acoutriment. O'Connor somehow managed to brave the rapids of confused taximen and a 5am train back to Dublin, whilst the remaining two managed a few hours of kip before staggering back into the city and boarding a slightly later bus.

Apr 15 - Trackmix
And so the crows are ready to take flight - or at least the main part of 'em. The last three tracks - I Will Never Settle For Anything Less Than Second Best, Throw Me Some Death and Waiting Scales are in the bag, with all seven merely awaiting mastering. The day was otherwise uneventful, bordered by quotes from Curious George Bush's repertoire and a whole heap of Johnny Cash.

Apr 17 - Sherrif Guevara's, Carlow
Last gig of the mini-trek. Nova Static opened, followed by Tendency, who churned out a faultless set of Blink 182/Alkaline Trio/Green Day covers and bad blonde jokes. Kilkenny's Nearly Dead Jim were up next, blasting through impressive metal jams with some damn fine changes of pace. And free sampler CDs. Following a hearty introduction by Aspro, gS moved into Throw Me Some Death, playing pretty much the same set as Scraggs, though with a little less gusto. Aspro bounded back up after Bethus to lend his voice to Liquid - first time played live - and it seemed to go down well with the throng. The show was then polished off by Al Capone Suite, who battled severe hangovers to deliver their usual excellent set of urgent rock good times. Photos from the gSet (incorporating the mighty Cowman) can also be found on the Images page.

Thanks to everyone involved during the week - GigSmart, soundmen, all the bands, everyone who showed up/roared/drank/bitched, Mick in Trackmix, the dudes we stayed with in Cork, and that man Aspro. Next step: the CD. And hopefully a handful of gigs to coincide. Stay tuned. Same Slip channel.

March 25 2004

gS will be back in live action in early April, with two dates (Scraggs Alley, Carlow, Saturday April 10th, afternoon, all ages & Sherrif Guevara's, Carlow, Saturday April 17th, evening, all ages) confirmed, and another in pencil. The Scraggs gig will be headlined by Pinion as part of their "A.F.M." single launch tour, the latest undertaking by the GigSmart stable. Also appearing in Sheriff Guevara's are Al Capone Suite and Nova Static.

Furthermore, we hope to be heading back to Trackmix in the very near future, instruments of rock in hand. Three tracks await vocals and the like - Waiting Scales, Throw Me Some Death and I Will Never Settle For Anything Less Than Second Best. And then the crow is ready to fly.

The gS guestbook has been replaced by the infinitely more friendly gS messageboard - go here and be nice.

March 15 2004

The briefest of updates, to keep y'all appraised of our doings; we're heading into Trackmix in early March to kick out the jams, two years on from Tommy Slot's day. Tunes set to feature include Bethus, C-Hucks, There Were Snakes, Waiting Scales, I Will Never Settle For Anything Less Than Second Best, Liquid, Throw Me Some Death, and The Can. We plan to get these out as soon after as possible - in single, EP or mini-album format - nothing's decided yet. And to coincide with the release, you can expect to see gS treading the gig boards as much as feasibly possible. The rock is coming. Wear a spare pair of pants.

[Click here for a report from the studio and an mp3 sample for your ears! Live dates in April to follow.]

In the meantime, here's a live MP3 of Woolhammer, courtesy of Dave & the desk at TBMC. Recorded in January 2003 - indeed, part of the AWOL live set "gS gET gOT" - it comes complete with unintended drama... GASP as then-guitarist Baz begins peeling out the buzzsaw riff, despite the protests of unready drummer Murt and bassist Niall. SHRIEK as the drummer joins in, fucking the song up royally. CHORTLE as frontman Jimmy interjects, demanding that the song is restarted. DON'T CARE as gS then hurtle through the tune. EIRCOM will probably jack up your phone bill while you download it.

November 12 2003

Many thanks to James Byrne and all involved with the Sherrif Guevera's gig last weekend, which rocked like a bastard in a boat. The gSet saw the first airings of There Were Snakes and I Will Never Settle For Anything Less Than Second Best, though the resurrection of old school classic Tom (Extension) was abandoned at the last minute. Other highlights of the day - the second band's insanely young drummer giving hell, Popstar Chris and his "we didn't have them in my day" perv mantra, and the landslide of pints during The 8th Day's set. The session that followed ended up in The Shed at 4am, and there was much weightlifting buffoonery.

Studio time has been booked for the end of January, and the intention is to get all of the post-Tommy Slot stuff down on tape. So we're looking at half a dozen tracks thus far, and whatever else heavy metal nonsense gets scribbled on the Punk Pad between now and then.

October 31 2003

gS will be appearing at the Anti-Pop all-ages shindig in Sherrif Guevara's, Carlow, on Saturday, November 8. Also on the bill are The 8th Day, Popstar, Excuse For Escape and Scatterbrained. First band tunes up around 3pm, so doors should open shortly beforehand.

All going well, this gig should sport the first airings of newbies There Were Snakes and I Will Never Settle For Anything Less Than Second Best. As always, laughing at the titles on the gSetlist is considered neither big nor clever.

September 17 2003

Added a bunch of pictures from recent gigs in Eamon Doran's and Level One (at Annex Simon's behest) - thanks, as always, to master photographer def ME. Check them out here.

We are planning to get back into the recording thang some time soon - Bethus, The Can and C-Hucks are likely featurettes, along with newbie There Were Snakes (stop fucking laughing) and another unnamed fledgling.

Furthermore, bootleg merchants and eBay fanatics can expect delivery of much-delayed live beer coaster "gS gET gOT" over the coming weeks. Recorded at the Music Centre in January, this is the last gS recording incorporating departed guitarist Baz.

August 08 2003

The gS involvement in the Music Matters International Battle Of The Bands has come to an end, following last night's quarter final heat in the Voodoo Lounge. The slightly reworked gSet (Woolhammer, Circuts, Excuse?, The Can, Bitter Pill To Swallow, C-Hucks, Bethus) went down a treat nonethless, as the pork pie hat looked on from atop O'Connor's amp. Many thanks to Vanessa at MMI, and all those who turned up in the name of Slip.

Congratulations to outright winners Clergy, whose excellent meld of vocal and metal sounded all the more impressive given that they were down a bassist.

And we trust that the parents of the second band through to the semi finals are proud of their achievement. Er, the band's achievement, that is.

Next up for gS is another all-ages GigSmart outing in Level One, Carlow, on Sunday August 24th. Also on the bill are Skyjack, Pinion, The Al Capone Suite and Scatterbrained. More details & flyer to follow; doors should be somewhere around 2pm, and the door tax in or around six of your European dollars.

June 24 2003

gS are through to the third round of the Music Matters International Battle Of The Bands, following last night's heat in the Voodoo Lounge. Not quite the elative success it might sound like: the band were through (along with Violent Sky) before a note had been played, thanks to the non-appearance of the other two bands in their pool.

Yeast, Bitter Pill To Swallow and Bethus were highlights of the gSet, as was Jimmy's uncharacteristic microphone manner, dedicating each song to Dave, and O'Connor's unconfirmable but persistant baiting of the same man's sexual orientation.

Many thanks to Vanessa for having us, our supportive posse, and to Violent Sky. The gSquad are on a month's hiatus, allowing for Jimmy's trek to Uncle Sam, with the next heat of the competition due to take place in early August.

June 16 2003

gS will be competing in the second round of the Music Matters International Battle Of The Bands competition at the Voodoo Lounge on Monday, June 23rd.

Many thanks to Mexican Dog Circus for the Eamon Doran's gig on Tuesday (May 20) last. The gSet was not without incident - freefalling strobe lights hovering perilously over the whimpering drummer, broken strings & impromptu jams - but rocked in a splendid way regardless.

Said strobe light had already crashed down on an unmanned kit prior to soundcheck, hence the trepidation and reluctance to go anywhere near the drum stool. Six songs into the set, Jimmy suffered a broken string, and Yeast took on something of an unusual air. While the frontman replaced the bastard thing, the remaining two skanked into Egyptian Sketch and fielded questions from the floor. Once re-armed, it was into Bethus and a suitable end to the fumblings.

May 13 2003

gS are through to the second round of the Music Matters International Voodoo Lounge Battle Of The Bands - tremendous! Also appearing at last night's heat were Rebel and Mexican Dog Circus. The gSet consisted of C-Hucks, Bitter Pill To Swallow, Circuts, The Can, Woolhammer, Excuse?, Bethus. Many thanks to Vanessa & M.M.I. for having us, and to anybody out supporting the Slip.

Next up for gS is a gig with Mexican Dog Circus in Eamonn Doran's on Tuesday evening, May 20th, followed by Round 2 of the Voodoo competition (date TBC).

April 14 2003

gS are a three-piece once more, following the departure of second guitarist (and fellow loyal Red) Baz from the ranks. The man himself has provided the statement below by means of explanation.

It is with a great sadness that Gymslip announce that they have parted company (amicably) with long time axe-meister Baz. The group cite musical and commitment differences as the cause of the split.

Baz would like to thank Jimmy, Murt and Niall for giving him the opportunity to be part of the mighty Gs, and for all the good times since he joined. Thanks also to all the bands we played with, especially to Popstar and Gigsmart, and everyone involved in organizing all the gigs, and to everyone who burnt, borrowed, and stole the cd.
Thanks again,
Baz.
In turn, we would like to thank Ralph Funk Railroad for his contribution to the band, particularly his hand in writing the likes of Woolhammer, Yeast, The Can, etc. His legacy lives on in the rawk. Oh yes.

To say nothing of mad interviewee skills... "I wrote that."

Next up for gS is a Music Matters International Battle Of The Bands in the Voodoo Lounge on Monday, May 12. Photos from the Level One show (sample below) are now available here.

April 09 2003

Many thanks to Niall & GigSmart for having us in our hometown on Saturday, April 5. The second Level One show was an absolute pleasure to be part of, an effective amnesiac to disgraceful refereeing decisions and sullen Czech youngsters being substituted.

With the doors open to all ages once more, there was a decent throng taking up dancefloor positions when The Al Capone Suite kicked proceedings off. The band were visibly and vocally appreciative of the Carlow response, as the crowd headbanged and hurled themselves along to some damn fine tunes.

Next up were gS, whittled down to a three-piece by the absence of worker Baz. Yeast made a welcome return to the fold, and the newer material (which was omitted late on from the last disastrous Level One performance) sounded all the finer with Jimmy's borrowed plank. The dual vocal strains of Bethus brought an end to the set, rounded off by O'Connor's jocks-removal trick. The crowd approved of both this and the tunes, and we managed to offload a handful of CD's, so it was all good.

Athy boys The 8th Day took over soon after, delivering a set of extremely heavy yet melodic fare. During the course of the day, there were ex-members of Disarm, Neckweed and Depraved playing where Cisco's had once stood - 1996 revisited!

Headliners Mike Got Spiked began with a cover of Incubus' New Skin, and the Calabasas influence continued throughout, as they moved from summer funk to full-on metal rage with consumate ease. And ending with a rawk medley of TV theme tunes ("Knight Rider" to "Fraggle Rock" to "Friends") was always going to be a winner - tremendous!

There was also a hastily-organised two song supergroup tribute to Kurt Cobain, and an impromptu rendition of some Tendacious D tune, both featuring heavy crowd participation. Thanks to all who showed up, and to the bands - it was a darn good day!

The latest def ME images (from Voodoo Lounge, March 19) are now available here - check the outdoor psychedelia. Images from the Level One will also be available, hopefully by the end of the week.

March 20 2003

Many thanks to Vanessa and Music Matters International for having us at the Midweek Madness gig @ Voodoo last night. This time around, it was the rather bizarre appearance of a bused-in "rent-a-crowd" (© the road fiends) and their camera crew providing the temporal distraction. During the opening set, revellers were treated to an elborate human backdrop as a minibus pulled up on the quays, and slowly spilled its contents through the doors. Young Meade pointed to the sudden flourish of lights & video cameras on tripods, and muttered his suspicions concerning designer crowds, stylists and the like. Sure enough, in mere minutes the extras had lowered their drinky-poos and re-boarded the fun bus, leaving a wave of head-scratching and bye-byes in their wake.

The gSet was almost identical to the last Voodoo show (C-Hucks, Bitter, Circuts, Can, Interlude, I.B.A.S., Wool, Excuse?, Bethus) and passed without a hitch. Unless "hitch" could be defined as "Baz's decision to start playing parts in Bethus he's never played before, confusing the fuck out of the other three."

Next up is another all-ages GigSmart date in Level One (Devereux's), Carlow, on Saturday April 5th with The 8th Day, Pinion and The Al Capone Suite.

Doors open at 2pm, and admission will be 6 European dollars. There will be a mineral bar inside the venue, with a full bar (requiring ID) in the lounge outside.

March 10 2003

The barest of updates: thanks to the Radiator guys for having us at the Voodoo Lounge on March 02. Despite the best intentions of Messrs. Gerrard & Owen to ensure that the Anfield contingent would be as drunk as fuck, the Slip blasted through a seven song set (C-Hucks, Bitter, Circuts, Can, Wool, Excuse?, Bethus) in fine fettle.

gS return to the same venue (39-40 Arran Quay, Dublin 7) on March 19 for a Music Matters International gig; also appearing are Volcanic Eruption, Slut Rug and Koshir. Show starts at 8pm, and admission is €5.

January 30 2003

Muchos gratitude to Niall and GigSmart for having us at the Music Centre on January 8th. The gig was a stormer (for us; sadly not for the hecklers) and thanks to the expert D.O.O. skills of def ME, we have both photographic evidence and a Mini Disc recording ganked straight from the desk, incorporating three newbies - "The Can", "C-Hucks", and "Bethus". We hope to have a handful of CD copies available soon. In the meantime, check out the pictures by clicking here. No definite news on the Voodoo Lounge gig yet, but February is still scribbled in pencil.

The boys also made their radio debut on 104.9 FM on Sunday, January 19. Jimmy, Baz and Niall mumbled their mashed/drunk* (* delete as appropriate) way through a 30 minute segment, pausing only to allow the tones of "Bitter Pill To Swallow", "Circuts", "Woolhammer" and "Int Interlude" ring out across Dublin. Thanks to Muiren for the FM promotion.

Absentee Murt fell foul of wine-boy O'Connor's reluctance to call him anything other than Marty throughout the interview. The drummer would also be called out as some kind of basement-dwelling simpleton; despite Jimmy's best efforts to deflect the bass-goon away from his bemuddled commentaries, O'Connor persisted. And in the interests of percussive retribution, let's remind ourselves of Niall's standard response to four whole cans of beer...

Four Can Syndrome

January 06 2003

Firstly, there are a couple of changes to the TBMC bill - see the revised flyer below, complete with the oldest of old school gS reference points. Slightly outdated. Expect to see the Slip slithering onstage somewhere between 9:30 and ten bells. There is a cover charge, but y'all can get your hands on free tickets if you accost Jimmy nicely. Whether or not Baz and O'Connor will be completing the illusion and dressing up as Floody and Wog on the night remains to be seen...

Secondly, the Voodoo Lounge show on the 24th appears to have been rearranged, and set instead for some time in February, to the best of our present knowledge. More news when and as we get it.

TBMC III

December 19 2002

A year on from the introduction of the Girls' Locker Room... welcome to the new gS site, version 6.0. Green and blue. "Madden, John".

We have a couple of gigs lined up for the New Year - another GigSmart outing on January 8th in the Temple Bar Music Centre (with X-Constant, The 8th Day & Splinters), and a Music Matters International show on January 24th in the Voodoo Lounge (with X-Constant & The 8th Day). The TBMC flyer is at the bottom of this update. Cheers to Niall and Vanessa respectively for hooking us up.

Sadly, "Puncture" will not be aired at either gig, as it has been ruthlessly disgarded, vetoed as it was by 3/4 of gS. "The bastards", drummer Murt insisted, when asked to comment on the decision. Happily, "Bethus", "The Can" and "C-Hucks" should be ready to do the baby raptor thing in good time. There is a tentative February studio plan in place - but remember, this is a gS calendar. It moves a little more slowly than anybody else's...

TBMC III

December 07 2002

Time for an update - if only to have the doom and gloom of the Level One abomination banished to the archives. Banish - there, it's gone.

Not a whole lot of news to pass on, admittedly - there's just no way to make 9am Sunday morning rehearsals sound interesting. Er, check out the gS AOL Buddy Icon (that irritating little fucking animation on the right). To save it, right-click and choose "Save Picture As". Not that gS deserves any such promotion at this point in time...

There is some fresh rock goodness on the horizon - namely the as-yet-unpopped "The Can", "Bethus" and newbie "Puncture". This last title is one literally chosen on the spot, and hence almost guaranteed to change. We plan to get these suckers down on tape at some early stage in the New Year.
There is also a Yuletide gig in the pipeline - full details will be posted here just as soon as things have been confirmed.

October 21 2002

gS would like to apologise to anybody who sat through our "performance" at Level One, Devereux's, Carlow on Saturday October 19th. Because we were fucking shit. We sucked ass harder than the indigenous ass-sucking rectal warts of the Amazon Basin. The consequential pint-heavy post-mortem failed to raise any possible excuses short of the absence of a soundcheck, a fucked-up kick pedal, and Baz's plank inexplicably squealing like a little bitch for the entire set. But these in themselves are still no justification for stinking up the place like we did.

The day itself was infinitely more memorable for the following reasons - lugging 21st birthday seats from the dancefloor to a backing track of cleaning ladies insisting that they had heard nothing in the way of gig-promotion; Salif Diao's Senegalese winner against Dirty Leeds; Jimmy's clarity-free text message causing Murt to sprint through town for a soundcheck that would never happen; the valiant attempts of X-Constant's frontman to herd the wall-clinging crowd onto the floor being hampered by a dreadlocked bassist, who ended up striding stagewards with said frontman thrown across his shoulder; O'Connor being introduced to (and falling in love with) "The Four Horsemen" - must have been a good pint; the session that followed, spilling from pub to car park to a newly-shorn Doctor's house: left gaping in a phone box while the others fleeced past in a minibus, a certain drummer rejoined the deserting fucks some time later, tarring them all with the accusation of being "sly minibus-getting motherfuckers".

As an aside, somewhat ludicrously, it appears that Niall GigSmart fielded a number of phonecalls on the night before the gig, from "concerned" and "active" "parents", warning of the consequences should any of their darling offspring sport an injury post-show. They graciously stopped just short of mentioning anything about the Satanism, the blood-drinking, and the goat-fucking...

Thanks to Niall for having us, to the bands, to all y'all who showed up, and to those who (unbelievably) still came looking for CD's. We apologise again for being so shit. We didn't have the nerve to pop the blisters on "The Can" or "Bethus" - there was enough going wrong as it was - but we would hope to birth the newbies next time.

The new gS CD Tommy Slot is now available, and will cost a mere five of your Mickey Mouse European dollars. It will be on sale at all gS gigs, and can also be ordered by email (click here) or alternatively by post - send your vital statistics and one crisp Eurovision tenner (covering P & P) to Jimmy O'Rourke, Flat 3, 44 Grove Park, Rathmines, Dublin 6. We recommend concealing the bill in some kind of wrapping. Like more cash.

The ten track CD (though casually patient listeners will come across bonus instrumentals "Robot" and "Egyptian Sketch") was recorded in a number of practice flats and bedrooms during July & August, with all subsequent editing and mixing handled by the band. Whilst sober. Honest. Click here to access Tommy Slot mp3's.

gS will be pawning (and performing) the CD at Level One, Devereux's, Carlow, on Saturday October 19th. The Carlow date is an all-ages gig, running from 2-6pm, and also featuring Popstar, Excuse For Escape, X-Constant and The 8th Day.

September 23 2002

Many thanks to Niall & GigSmart for having us at the Eamon Doran's gig on Sunday, September 22rd. gS appeared alongside The Murder Of Crows (minus one bassist) and Hubris, and hommered their way through a 10 song set (i.e. pretty much everything we gots) - debuting "Yeast" during soundcheck and rounding things off with current set-closer "Bitter Pill To Swallow".

The cramped confines of the backstage Achtung Baby Suite was embraced, before Jimmy and Dave led the mass exodus towards The Court. Here, epic Pro Evolution Soccer battles followed a roundly-ignored playback of Tommy Slot - Jay and Silent Bob managed to fare better on the attention-grabbing front. There was a 2am jaunt to the 24 Hour, an encounter with The Angry Asian, and a series of pukes before an end was called to proceedings. Thanks to the bands & all those who came along to support the gS cause - the reluctant road crew, the anti-hecklers, and the Carlow posse.

Next up is the release of the new CD, and a further GigSmart outing in Carlow. Check the flyer for more details.

September 17 2002

A couple of gigs have lined themselves up nicely for the impending release of Tommy Slot - many thanks to Niall and GigSmart for sterling work in this regard. Click on either flyer for the full-sized version. We hope to have the CD ready for extortional retail in time for the first show, but failing that, the bitch will most definitely be ready for the Level One lowdown.

Admission: Six of your special European dollars.
Venue: Level One, Devereux's, Carlow

August 29 2002

It began with a long and drawn out bus journey from The Pale, complete with ridiculous delays caused by the fucking Luas bullshit. It then involved O'Connor subverting a pill-chewing female passenger, noodling loudly into her mobile. "I wish I was dead". It would later involve Popstar guitarist Chris (and his girlish nails) drawing blood from gS drummer Murt. It was the return of gym slip... to the Fatherland, a date in Sheriff O'Hara's on Wednesday, August 28th 2002.

To the horror of those around him, Baz produced a bottle of wine from his rucksack at 1am the next morning, prompting incredulous whines along the lines of "hold on - why the fuck were we not drinking that whilst stuck in a traffic jam?" Once in Carlow, the gS posse bounced towards the venue, where (Annex A) were about to unveil their new lineup. Amongst their repertoire was old school gS classic "Murt's Song"; sadly, the most positive comment to rise from the gS corner was "well, at least they're doing something different with it". Shortly after, it was into the front bar to view Liverpool's 2-2 draw with Graeme "Club Wrecker" Souness' Big_Team_Rejects Rovers. Popstar were busy doing the rock star thing i.e. being late, so gS stepped gamely into their slot - a little like Dog Eat Dog and Biohazard at Donington in the Nine Six. As a reward, they were given extra time, so there were a few late additions to the set. Kudos to the barmaid who held on to the half-finished gS pints, handing them back when the sweaty foursome returned after the performance.

Many pints later, the crew relocated to Chez Decky & Mary, for an expansive array of food, Buckfast and chronic. There were guitars, and impromptu versions of Slayer, Floyd and, um, Depraved tunes. Those unfortunate enough to require the red-eye return to The Pale the next morning were forced to abandon the fledgling session, leaving the vision of Jimmy sprawled across an armchair, blunt in hand, wondering if positive thinking alone would flip the Alice In Chains LP on the turntable.

There are a further two gigs in the pipeline (Dublin & Carlow), and details will be posted here as soon as we know more. Oh, and Tommy Slot is lurking around the corner. Big ups to Emmett for hooking us up with the Sherrif gig.

Setlist: Int Intro, Circuts, Woolhammer, Portion, Robot, Excuse?, Anna Rex, Bitter Pill To Swallow

August 23 2002

gS play Sherrif O'Hara's, Carlow, on Wednesday 28th August, alongside The 8th Day, Slave Zero, Excuse For Escape, Popstar & more. Admission is five Mickey Mouse European dollars, and doors open at 6pm. Expect to hear The Slip skank into "Circuts" somewhere around nine bells. "Tommy Slot" will then follow in September.

July 15 2002

Added some pictures from the June TBMC show with Popstar to the Images 2001-present page - they're as dark as fuck, but still the only existing live shots of the current foursome.

The recording of "Tommy Slot" is now well under way, with only a handful of instrument tracks still to be laid down. We are as reluctant as ever to propose a release date, but what we have so far rocks like a blue whale being dropped from a great height onto a concrete pavement. (Not that we are anything other than abhorred by the abuse of blue whales, naturally). It's all good.

June 25 2002

Many thanks to Chris and the Popstar boys for having us at the June TBMC show. Despite being lumbered with a ridiculously grumpy drummer (freshly christened "Blackadder"), and bathed in a bizarrely dark light show, gS hurtled through "Int Intro", "Woolhammer", "Portion", "I.B.A.S.", "Excuse?", "Anna Rex" and "Bitter Pill To Swallow", and left the stage to a much-appreciated roar of approval; Baz's Lucan mates and the Annex A crew leading the mob just as the high priests led Pilate's crowd? The aforementioned guitarist disappeared shortly after hopping offstage, leading to suggestions that he had gone into hiding, fearing needlessly that the bitch on drums was unhappy with the performance.

There was (briefly) a high-quality Mini Disc recording of the set, but the disc was sadly destroyed in a Dutch Gold-related incident. The perp will be forgiven once the fruits of his photography spree have been made available. Kudos must go to Otranome's crutched drummer, who played while still recovering from a broken ankle, and to Pinion, who battled the elements (or rather consecutive broken strings and kick pedals) during their set.

gS were scheduled to play Sheriff O'Hara's, Carlow, on Thursday June 27th, along with The 8th Day and Excuse For Escape. Unfortunately, the gig has been temporarily postponed, but is likely to take place during July/August.

We begin recording the new shit this week. Current newbie "Yeast" is expected to feature alongside all that which was listed previously. A tentative delivery date - September. But remember that the gS calendar moves a little more slowly than anybody else's...

June 06 2002

gS will open for Popstar once again at the Temple Bar Music Centre on Saturday, June 22nd. Pinion are also returning to the bill, which is completed by Otranome. Doors open at 7:30pm, and admission is 8 Mickey Mouse European dollars. You can save yourself 100 cents by printing out the flyer, or picking one up from various locations around the city. Please note that this is an all-ages show, though under 16's must be accompanied by an adult.

Right-click on the flyer and select "Save Picture As...", or click on the link for the full-size file.

We hope to have some new material ready in time for this rock extravangaza. And then we'll be getting down to work on the new CD. Honest.

May 29 2002

Added a bunch of pictures to the Images 2001-present page, as found on the Images menu - needless to say. Sadly, nothing of a performance nature, unless necking spirits and beer was ever considered a performance art. Check the 4 Can Syndrome.

We start recording the new disc (now tentatively titled "Tommy Slot") on June 16th, yet nobody is brave enough to mutter anything about a provisional date by which it is intended to have the fucker finished. There are ongoing internal disputes with regard to what ends up on the final CD, but everything we gots is going down on tape. The cuts that don't make the final draft will be posted here in mp3 format for the completely masochistic gS fiend.

There is also another choice support slot in the pipeline, pencilled for sometime in late June; as soon as anything is confirmed, it'll be here in big bold letters. Or small barely legible white ones.

May 09 2002

It's been a month since the last update; time to bring y'all up to speed on the world of Gymslip (sic).

"Bitter Pill To Swallow" is the latest addition to the gS stable - expect to see it staggering around on unsure punk legs at a venue near you sometime soon. And on the subject of gigging, Annex A (the urchins formerly known as Willknot) are rumoured to be putting together a summertime bill of Carlovian and Dub bands to pound the Barrowside into submission. Furthermore, Floodfest 2002 is still a possibility, with Dangerous Damien Flood promising to return from Denmark in time to host the definitive gS festival. As soon as anything is confirmed, it'll be posted here.

It is also our intention to spend the summer months working on a new album, and having it out and aboot by the Autumn. The opus has a working title of "Finishing School", which - as is the gS trait - is subject to change. Tracks set to feature include "Anna Rex", "Portion", "Int Intro", "Robot", "Egyptian Sketch", "Woolhammer", the aforementioned newbie, and new recordings of three cuts from the last CD - "Excuse?", "I.B.A.S." and "Circuts".

April 09 2002

From the early morning hot 'n' hungover three hour rehearsal through to the bleary-eyed screening of "Orgazmo" 24 hours later, the Music Centre show with Popstar was nothing short of tremendez. As the Director Of Operations was heard to muse, ice coldie in hand - "it's all good".

Just shy of 8pm, gS kicked off proceedings with "Excuse?", and rocked (Jimmy & Murt) or stood (Baz & Niall) their way through "Robot", "I.B.A.S.", "Woolhammer", "Portion" and "Anna Rex". The Willknot boys moaned about the absence of "Circuts", but were comforted by the news that there was video footage of gS soundchecking said tune, thanks to def ME. O'Connor brought his own brand of skullduggery to the backstage beering area, and teamed up with various members of Pinion and the headliners to form tag team recitals, sword fights and empty crate racing.

Thanks to Chris and Popstar for everything, Pinion, The Keds, and everybody who travelled/showed up to support the gS cause on the night.

March 27 2002

Still haven't managed to lay my hands on a flyer for the Popstar gig - the image below might suffice if any of y'all want to save one Mickey Mouse dollar on the door. With our dedicated practice schedule interrupted rather rudely by Easter, birthday celebrations, Bazwald's lady and Vladimir Smicer, we're sweating profusely at the prospect of no more rehearsals between now and the T.B.M.C. show. Because considering the "remix" versions of certain tunes performed on the 15th, we fucking need it!! In the meantime, I have added a chronology of crap gS logos - check it @ Sir Logolot on the Images menu. Abudish.

March 19 2002

The Old Schools show has been and gone, and despite the usual technical hitches, human errors and unsettling text messages from an ex-bassist cradling a bottle of something something in Denmark, gS returned to the stage in fine style. Bazwald learned not to interfere with Jimmy's equipment in the throes of thrashing about - "Step on my lead again and I'll fucking kill you". Minutes later, the new guy was nursing his own broken string. Just one of those days.

The entire event was expertly captured on film by Dr. Deck, ably deputised by Dave, suggesting moody pans of the Cathedral, pulling off roadie movements etc. The slip were preceeded by Limp and Numb, and followed by Willknot, who were joined by Jimmy and Murt for runs through S.O.A.D.'s "Suite Pee" and gS classic "Murt's Song" respectively. No more should be said of O'Connor's disgraceful Survivor vocal stylings over Willknot's last number. Cheers to the 'Knot boys for setting shit up, and thanks to the bands, the sound guys, and all y'all who showed up.

Next up, gS are opening for Popstar at the Temple Bar Music Centre on Saturday, April 6th. Also on the bill are The Keds and Pinion. Admission is 8 Mickey Mouse dollars, 7 with a flyer, and doors open at 7:30 - expect to hear the first bass noodlings of "Excuse?" around 7:45. The flyer will be up here just as soon as I get it.

March 11 2002

For those of you with weak hearts, likely to be taken ill when suddenly surprised, here is our gS Healthy Heart Option for you - the setlist for Friday night's show. Download the damn thing, print it out, bring it along with your flask of tay and ham sambos, and tick off the songs as they are played. It's like heavy metal bingo, and everyone is a winner.

Please note that this is not a legally binding document.

At this moment in time, it is unclear whether the Old Schools gS performance will be manned by Jimmy, Baz, Niall and Murt or their musical superhero alter-egos - Jimiloquai, Ralph Funk Railroad, Fisherman's Friend and Murtice Murtwater Revival.

This entire diary entry? Blame it on litres of Rosé, marmalade sandwiches, and that strange glass machine.

March 01 2002

The Old Schools bill has been finalised, with Numb and FC:69 set to join gS, Willknot and Limp at the all-ages hoe-down on March 15th. Doors open at 5:30pm, apparantly, with the first band due on at 6pm, and admission will cost two of your Mickey Mouse European dollars.

Also, check out the gS page at GigSmart, a new collective of musicians and resources we are more than happy to be involved with. GigSmart promote and support underground music by hosting gigs in a variety of venues across Dublin, and Volume I of their "Ignored, Scorned...Born" compilation CD is currently doing the rounds. Click on the logo to access their website.

February 27 2002

gym slip... have been added to the March 15th Anti-Pop bill, scheduled to shake the walls of the Old Schools, College Street, Carlow - a rocking good way to kickstart our patron saint's weekend. Also appearing are Willknot and Limp, with at least one more band to be confirmed. This will be gS's first outing with Baz and Niall, and also their first non-Floodfest appearance in the hometown since Eigse 1999. I hasten to add that with a gigging log that includes November 27th 1999, and a handful of cancelled shows, believe this one when you see the gSquad picking up their instruments to play. Doors open at 6pm - more information when we get it.

New material likely to be aired at the Old Schools - "Portion", "Woolhammer", "Egyptian Sketch" and "Robot". We have ditched the working titles from below...

We did intend to have the fruits of another def ME photo shoot for y'all to view, but sadly we were foolish enough to plan an outdoor pursuit in Ireland. Regardless of the time of year. Can anybody pinpoint the exact time when this sub-tropical armpit island climate slid into the Arctic Circle?

February 06 2002

Um, it's been a while. No doubt. Not a lot of news, apart from the fact that new tunes are being crafted at a pleasant pace; so far, three with working titles of "Sir Logolot", "Mickey Doodle Doo" and "The Other New One". (Bear in mind that these are ridiculous fucking titles, and subject to change just as soon as lyrics are written). Practically all of the old gS back catalogue is being dropped from our repertoire, with only a handful of our babies from the Duffle Coat Era surviving the Jimmy-chop. "Fuck aye if I'm playing any of those shite songs", scowled the frontman when questioned, according to shocked eyewitnesses.

Compensating for the loss of brief second guitarist Babar, Jimmy is once again manning his six-string, providing gS with a permanent twin plank assault for the first time. And it is sounding sweet. We aim to be in a position to bring the live noise to y'all sometime soon. Honest.

December 10 2001

Back once again. With a new site, a new domain (http://www.murtdog.com), and some new faces. Joining vocalist Jimmy and drummer Murt in the gSquad - guitarists Babar and Baz, and bassist Niall. For a little more background on all three, check out the history 2001-present page. Right about now, we're doing our best to get shit together with regard to the new boys learning the old stuff. (There's only so much whipping one can get away with before the whole human rights nuisance comes into play). There are optomistic whimpers about some kind of public performance in late January 2002, but as with ALL promises, declarations and undertakings made by this bunch of chronic wasters, believe it if you see it.

October 12 2001

And so Pisswire joins the gS Shitlist. Mulder is whispering something about a tenuous link between our so-called "bass player" fucking off to Scandanavia for months on end, and the sudden severance of the meatball-chewing Euro-mullet independent band "promotion" webshite, Poopwire. Fuck it, the mp3's will soon be available elsewhere. There is now a QUEUE of people lining up to administer oral sex...

October 10 2001

Due to the bizarre disappearance of the original Depraved -> Slacker tribute, a new page has been commissioned. Click nyawh to see what Mr. Pop has to say.

gS will be kicking out the jams in the very near future, having been on something of a bassist-enforced hiatus since Floodfest. Through the swirling mists of rumbles and rumours about new members, the usual gS standard of "no comment" is all that is being offered. As soon as there is any confirmed news, it will be posted here.

July 11 2001

http://gymslip.homestead.com is no more...thanks to Homestead's sudden decision to start charging dollars for their "service". However, a link to the new gS address - http://www.geocities.com/gymslipthreedots (shut up, it's the best I could do) - will graciously remain at Homestead, just in case any of our legions of fans get trapped there.

Of course, I should be able to see past the cock-sucking money-raking intentions of Homestead's bullshit controllers, and thank them for four long years of gS hosting, which ranged from reliable to ridiculous, sometimes during the same day. But I can't. I'm just seeing the nuisance of having to port the entire site to its new home (for what it's worth). So, Homestead, fuck you very much.

June 20 2001

Floodfest 2001 - bigger, better, drunker, more. Thanks to all who attended - Tri-Kaya & touring posse, the Carlow crew and all y'all else. Read all about it anseo

June 05 2001

Floodfest 2001 is go - gym slip... will appear at Floodfest 2001, Staplestown, Carlow on Saturday, June 16. Joining them on the bill will be Tri-Kaya and Sass (both TBC) and Willknot. There will be full camping facilities, food, bizarre DJ sets, and a half-litre of Vervier to share amongst the bands.

Click on the flyer to enlarge.

April 02 2001

MP3s of the new shit are now available on the sounds page. Check 'em out.

gym slip... are now represented on the Popwire website, a rather cool horde of unsigned & independent bands, hosted by our Swedish friends. Bow down at the gS Popwire shrine here

Rumours have it that the first of this summer's guerilla gigs will take place in Balrothery during the first (long) weekend in May. Tri-Kaya, Henge and gym slip... have been approached to perform. More details as we get them.

March 18 2001

The new gS CD, "Excuse?", is now available for purchase / bootlegging / theft from the usual suspects. Priced somewhere around £2 (depending on the inebriation of the seller), it is available from band members, and will be on sale at gigs. You can also order a copy by email - simply mail murt_chamber with your details.

The CD consists of three tracks - "Excuse?", "I.B.A.S" and "Circuts", although the vigilant and patient listener will find a fourth track, the instrumental "Lost". The CD also hosts some rather spanking multimedia content; spoof Flash slip_umentary "Behind The Badness". Please note that this presentation is not designed with shitty spec computers in mind i.e. use a decent puter or it'll be pants.

Artwork

Mp3's of all four tunes will be available as and from next week. And in the meantime, here are three variations on a proposed new gS logo.

March 08 2001

Still recording...still hope to have it out and aboot by St. Patrick's Day.

Added a Flash intro to the site, changed some of the colours. Oh, and wrote a rather splendid new choon, "Anna Rex". It rocks.

February 21 2001

Um, we're in the middle of recording right now - hope to have it out and about sometime in March. We've slapped down "Excuse?", "Lost", "I.B.A.S." (finally) and new tune "Circuts".

Topically following on from The Baseball Fury's rocking performance in Whelan's last night, here (straight ganked from The Kids website) is Steve's take on a rather special evening in Carlow in the year IMM.

"...granted, and this is fucking brilliant, a friend of mine went into the same place and booked a gig for his band and a band from Dublin, no bother. The management even promoted the gig, the posters went something like this - Wednesday: Traditional music with Roisin Dubh, Thursday: Gymslip, Trikaya and support. Ad in the local papers an'all. Cool, thought everyone, the gig's a goer. So the boys turn up on the day and set up, play something like 30 seconds of a sound check and the manager runs up to them and tells them to get out. "When I booked you I thought you were a country and western band", I'm sure he added something about, "not this noise" and "long-haired good for nothings". What kind of a man was this? The boys had trousers hanging off them so baggy you could fit a Bus Eireann special service up them, some of them had dreads and make up on and he thought they were country and western. GREAT."

January 27 2001

Cheers to Joe for the wicked bootlegging job he did on the Temple gig. CD copies of said recording are doing the usual rounds. Added some pictures from that show to the images page.

January 22 2001

gym slip... have parted company with vocalist Johnny Burroughs. The band will continue as a three-piece, with guitarist Jimmy taking over vocal responsibilities. The band hope to have new material available by the end of February in the shape of "I.B.A.S." and "Excuse?".

gS played their first gig as a threesome at The Kids' all-dayer on January 7th in The Temple. And despite being lumbered with a drummer who "sucked ass", the slip... gave a reasonable account of themselves. Thanks to The Kids for having us, and to The Baseball Fury and The Kabinboy for rocking our asses.

gS website gets overhaul #3. Tremendez.

January 02 2001

All-dayer gym slip... will play The Temple (71 Dorset Street) on Sunday, January 7th, along with The Kabinboy, DEBT, Cosmonaut, Prell, nerdlinger, Sir Killalot and The Baseball Fury. Doors open at 4pm, first band at 5pm, and admission is five notes.

Thanks again to Steve and The Kids for hooking us up.

December 11 2000

PlaySanta

"Fuck you!!"

Is anybody familiar with the Morbid Angel reworking of "Jingle Bells" that Korn spewed forth as "Jingle Balls"?

gym slip... have done a similar job on Wham's sickly sweet "Last Christmas". Download the mp3 anseo - but hurry : Geocities' dumb ass service has been known to fuck over vital gS files in the past.

BE WARNED - you will be exposing yourself to ludicrous grunts and blast beats.

Big ups to Becki's Garden Of Graphics for the malevolent Santa.

December 05 2000

New tune, tentatively called "Excuse?" (despite the terrorist renaming tactics of Floody) is on the way. And it will kick you. In the boo boo. We hope to get some of that gigging shit going in January.

Added a review from the Thumped website pertaining to our show with Some Days Better and Waver in June. Check it out on the articles page.

Also added links to the Staplegun site and the posthumous Depraved->Slacker page.

Willknot R.I.P. They were only half-serious last time around, but now it's for real. Willknot are no more. The self-appointed gym slip... Appreciation Society are calling it a day. Thanks for showing up at Floodfest, boys. And for making the trip up to Doyle's.

Our first full practice in 5 months looms at the end of this week...

The gym slip... machine is back in operation.

November 08 2000

Beats me why anybody would want it, but here is a stupid gym slip... Winamp skin. It would appear that the rehearsal room situation has been sorted, so big ups to Floodog for that. Maybe now "Lost" and "Noise Gait" will be birthed properly.

gym slip... Winamp skin

October 20 2000

It appears that Geocities have fucked over the Shed Enterprises site, and as such the three gym slip... games are no longer available there. Bastards. If anyone is interested in obtaining copies of these rather magnificent pieces of software, just mail murt_chamber

October 17 2000

It has been a while - too fucking long. As you may well have noticed, the site has been overhauled completely. Unfortunately, that's about all that's been happening recently. We're trying to get our shit together with regard to a practice room in Dublin - having all four members in the one country at the same time might be a fucking start. There's some new material allegedly in the pipeline, along with a couple of gigs with Tri-Kaya. As soon as anything is confirmed, it'll be up here. Abudish.

Having survived last week's hacking scare (X_ual strikes...) with considerable more dignity than the oafs at Eircom, it is now my duty to inform gym slappers of upcoming attractions. Murt's monotonous "I.B.A.S." drum track is awaiting the addition of guitars, bass and vocals, and should be available for public consumption within the month. Also, negotiations have begun with a number of venues around Dublin with a view to getting the slip_machine back into action in the capital. Rumours that the loss of Floody's beard will result in a Samson-esque dilution of the bassist's ability to pogo start here.

July 07 2000

The gig in Doyle's was a raging success - thanks to Waver and Some Days Better for having us, and to Steve, Ciaran and the Kids for setting shit up. Despite the usual flying-cymbals and leads-wrenched-from-guitars glitches, we bopped our little hearts out. "I.B.A.S." is quickly becoming a choice live tune. As is the norm, we are now one bassist down for the summer months, but we vow to return in spanking form just as soon as the bearded gimp returns.

June 16 2000

Check it, check it out. Download "Den : I Know (Punctured Bong Remix)" - remixed by Murt Snuts. Under a minute in length, pretty damn monotonous, but why the fuck not? And as soon as we get our hands on a four-track and the original tapes - full remix albums all over the place. Full length mp3 versions of the last demo to follow shortly. Enjoy. Get it anseo

Floodfest 2000 has come and gone in the wank of an eye. Not even the bastard weather in this bastard tropic armpit country could dampen the spirits of those who gathered in the name of music, beer and good times. Big ups to Tri-Kaya and Willknot for assisting in making the event such a success. Who needs bullshit venues anymore? Serious kudos, thanks and gratitude to Floody's parents for the use of the facilities, the good-natured patience, and the yummy food. Thanks also to our perma-fixtured road crew and management staff - def ME , X_ual, Dr. Dek. And to Juice, P, Mary, Annette, Lorraine and all who attended. We'll see ya next time. Check out the review anseo

Just when you thought it was safe to go back into your garden... pups and pupettes, the outdoor music event of the year : Floodfest 2000 (date to be confirmed - late May or early June). An afternoon of live music, followed by an evening of imbibing. Tri-Kaya and gym slip... have already been confirmed, with Sugar Fix and Willknot looking likely to complete the bill. Also featuring the Battle Of The D.J.'s - def ME VS X_ual. Crates of anything cheap. Shants are a priority. Plans are afoot to record the event, and to make the glorious sounds available for downloading at a later date. More details as we get them.

Having spent the day yesterday in Coláiste Dhúlaigh with Mixmaster Flood behind the desk, we are awaiting the delivery of the finished tracks of excellence. We laid down "Nua" and, at Johnny's advice, "Logo". It is hoped that these tracks will be suitable for our impending promotional campaign in England. At the end of our Irish campaign, we have been the recipients of constant polite refusals, with acknowledgement of our "superior quality, but not what we're looking for", and the odd truly hilarious reply - "not economically viable, locally or globally." Laugh? I needed a change of panties. Just like Prong, we aim to prove you wrong.

Phase two of the "Get Fucking Somewhere" campaign is now under way, with copies of the tremendous second demo sent to an array of labels around Ireland. Which will be as fruitful as an evening spent pissing into the wind, but hey, at least we're trying. Anybody interested in a copy should contact a member of the band.

January 5 2000

Mp3 clips of the three newly-recorded choons can now be downloaded from the sounds page. And they are fucking tremendous. The demo itself is now available from the band - just hand over a blank tape, or the relevant finance to cover one. If you wish to print out your own copy of the inlay card, (photocopies lead to a decrease in quality, kids) just click anseo then save the image, and print it out.

January 3 2000

Seeing as Floody has to return the recording equipment tomorrow, we have very little choice other than to get our second, as-yet-untitled demo finished today. All the music has been completed, and sounds rather sweet. It's up to the Wog now. We have recorded "Den : I Know", "Fudge", and a revamped version of "Epic". It is hoped to have said recording available for mass consumption by the end of the week.

Massive kudos to Baz, who has returned the first batch of gym slip... c.d.'s - he was commissioned to put three tracks ("Pigz", "Madden, John", "Logo") on c.d. as part of phase one of our world domination plans.
The mp3 page has been updated, with the new soundfiles smaller in size, and better in quality. There doesn't appear to be any problems with downloading them (at least I didn't have any), so you now have no excuse.

Needless to say, the illmannered fucks at The Nationalist have not, as yet, printed the article below. Too busy reporting on stray sheep, potholes and Puc Fáda competitions. Boo hoo. Check out the review of the gig in Johnny's by clicking on the icon across. Ballbag - the official gym slip... fanzine.

Ballbag II

December 3 1999

As you may well know, the gig intended to take place on November 27th was cancelled, by the venue, at the last minute. This gym slip... press statement, which has been (pointlessly?) circulated to the local newspapers, explains it all.

"Band Refused At Last Minute By Carlow Venue : Local rock band gym slip... were denied the opportunity to perform at a Carlow venue on Saturday, November 27, just hours before the show had been due to commence. Having booked the date with the venue's promoter, and confirmed the booking again with the pub's managament, the band were informed that they would not be allowed to perform - on the bizarre grounds that they were not a country and western band. The manager of the establishment alleged that he had been given to believe that gym slip... were a middle of the road act. Both promoter and band are adamant that such an impression could not have been formed, and the band maintain that an adequate description of the musical styles involved had been given.

A spokesperson for the band desribes the exchanges which followed. "There was no compromise, and not even any discussion on the part of the venue. We realise that our music does not appeal to a lot of people, but surely it was the prerogative of the management to determine clearly what would be involved before booking us in." The band were approached immediately after performing a soundcheck, and informed that there would be no show. "We were labelled initially a ska band, and then death metal. Both labels sit far from the truth, and display a certain lack of musical knowledge. We are simply a heavy guitar band, one who has performed at many different venues throughout Carlow in the past without such incidence."

Also on the bill that evening were Carlow band Sugar Fix, and Tri-Kaya, who had travelled from North Dublin. The bands had hoped to recover the costs of hiring a p.a. for the evening, and also the travelling expenses incurred, from the cover charge arranged for the door. Having established that there would be no show, the bands were informed that there would also be no expenses or refunds. They were then forced to removed their equipment, and display a note on the door informing those who would turn up expecting to see them perform. (The evening had been advertised by both band and venue).

"We have not witnessed this kind of situation before, and it is such a shame. It could easily deter young bands in the town from organising such events in the future."

Finally, gym slip... would like to apologise to anybody who had intended to attend the show. The band hope to bring together the original bill, at a different venue, possibly over the Christmas period."

Welcome to the Sick Pervo page, designed and lovingly prepared with the express intention of keeping gym slappers... up to date with all our unimportant details. As sure as there is shit in a goose's arse, I will update this page with details of new songs, proposed gigs, recording ventures etc. as they (hopefuckingfully) materialise.
Abudish, muRt.

First off, our sweaty palms are rubbing constantly together as we prepare for Slip On Shit, the gym slip... festival of sorts due to take place in The Castle Inn, Carlow, on November 27th. Sugar Fix and Tri-Kaya have been confirmed as support, with elusive d.j. def ME (pronouced deaf mahey) spinning disks in the interludes. Admission will be a quid, and a night of extreme sexual sensation is guaranteed.

It's taken him a while, but The Wog has finally finished his lyrics for the first new songs we've completed since "Tellytubby Execution G-Style". In a manner similar to the Gathering, the titles will have fuck all to do with his lyrics - the stupid temporary names we give the songs end up being the actual names. With some refining, of course - "Limp" was originally "Limp Dick Anaesthetic III", and "Madden, John" was at birth "John Madden's Furry Handlebars". Of the 2 new tunes, "Fudge" is a tremendously bouncy hardcore little number, whilst "Den" boasts one of the heaviest riffs known to mankind. We're contemplating sending a copy to Robb Flynn, Kerry King and Dimebag Darrell in order to have this confirmed.

To cease the endless whining of top photographer dm, here is a selection of his (and Floody's) work in Ranelagh after the Fear Factory gig in the S.F.X. on October 24th. The gig itself was awesome - the Factory were just as good as they were at Dynamo, Donington and Ozzfest. Will Haven were pretty samey, but had their moments. Out in the crowd during FF, WH frontman Grady was either moody or rude (Kerrang! articles would suggest the former), but I'll wait until we're touring the Ozzfest with Will Haven before making a final decision on that.
